Hey, I’ll play, I usually get a lot of Cubs, and most of you won’t want them anyway.

What kind of guarantee is that Davhaf? It’s not like you could do worse. 🙂

Well I guess the defending league champion better get in on the mix. Wouldn’t want to have to air mail my trophy anywhere.

With
no disrespect directed towards anyone else who has said they’d get in,
I would offer the 14 spots (although you can up the yahoo limit to 16)
to the 14 people who entered last year first. Then fill up slots if
someone declines to return.

Where’s Razzy? Raz, do your job, commish. biggrin.gif

The problem with the league is that it’s non-keeper so the folks that
fall out of contention have no reason to keep competing or
participating.

I’d do it again but there’d need to be some do-re-mi involved to ensure that didn’t happen. Or some sort of incentive.

Posted by: TTB Jan 18 2004, 11:55 AM
I’m in and a legacy. Razzy – are you going to organize this again?

I suspect we will have a couple drop outs. I have not heard from the Sarge in months.

Yeah. People who screw with things at the end suck.

We tried some money, but only about five people were going to come through at the time.

I do like the idea of switching to a keeper league. But, let’s still do
a draft this year. I drafted a lot vets that I might not have if I knew
it was a keeper league.

You have to go into the original draft with that mindset.

Hey guys, I wont be able to run the league this year, I am afraid. I also wont be able to even be in the league.

The reason?

The
wife and I are having triplets. All girls, at least according to the
“90% accurate” ultrasound we had recently. I just had a boy last
February, and now with three girls coming, I wont have the time to be
in a fantasy league. I am already in two other baseball leagues and a
basketball league, and I will still be in those. But I have to cut
something out, somewhere, at the wife’s behest.

She will likely have them sometime in May. Hopefully not before then. And no, no fertility drugs were involved.

It was my bionic sperm that did it cool.gif

LOL. I was totally going to ask that.

A guy at work had them and most definitely the drugs were involved.

WOW.

I can see that conversation. “Honey, let’s have 1 more kid and that’s it” … and then: “Doctor, did you just say ‘triplets’ ?”

Actually, razz, I’d love to hear the story of when you guys were told. Were you floored?

Edit by dvy: start a new triplets thread, razz.

Grote,

No,
I wont be able to be in the league this year, as much as I wish I could
be. But I have two other leagues that I am in, and wont give those up,
especially since they involve some $$$. I won 350 bucks in one league
last year for winning it.

Whoever is in the league this year,
make sure Grote is in it. He did a great job with the draft website
last year and his all-around enthusiasm was great to have.

No, no. We have to draft again …then go to keeper status.

I drafted a bunch of old farts on the hopes they had one last hurrah in them. It would take me years to recover.

Nice try though Dev. biggrin.gif

Some of the guys might like their teams and want to make it a keeper
league now but I just don’t think it would be fair. One would certainly
draft differently if he knew he was going to have the bulk of that
roster for a few years.

Dev – would be a great addition to the
league. Hopefully, he is not quite as sharp on baseball as we all know
he is on football. smile.gif

Posted by: devaskar Jan 18 2004, 12:54 PM

I’m honored that anyone thinks I’m sharp when it comes to any sport. I
know a lot about baseball, at least I think I do, and I think the same
when it comes to football too. But knowledge of baseball and football
has never translated into fantasy success for me. I never win anything
in fantasy leagues so I’m sure I’ll be a good addition to the league,
if for no other reason than to boost the egos of all the other
participants.

Some things I learned from last year, which was my first year in any fantasy league.

1)
Don’t draft for position. Draft for stats. I was scratching my head
after the 12th round wondering why some guys *still* didn’t have a
catcher. 🙂
2) You should watch the pitching matchups. Many folks
blew by me as I fell from the top 10 by making simple pitching matchup
adjustments.
3) You gotta watch Sportscenter. 🙂 Many of the young guys who start to have breakout years show up in the top 10 plays.
4)
Don’t decide to get funny with your team six weeks before the season
ends. This is a bad move and disrepectful to those who are still
playing hard.

Posted by: devaskar Jan 18 2004, 01:03 PM

I was in a league last year in which I had Scott Williamson, Mark
Redman, Woody Williams, and Matt Morris. I was doing GREAT in the first
half of the season, in first place from about mid-April through July.
The whole league was afraid of me. I picked up some excellent free
agents like Greg Myers and Morgan Ensberg. I had made so many great
trades that the entire rest of the league stopped trading with me–they
were all afraid I would rip them off like I had so many others.

Then
Morris hit his slump and got hurt, Redman leveled off, Williams wore
down, and Williamson got traded to Boston and was no longer a closer,
and what looked like a great team and the guy who looked like the Billy
Beane/Theo Epstein of the league ended up finishing sixth out of
twelve.

I’d have some interest in participating, but having large leagues makes
me cringe (large being over 12)…you run into people bailing b/c there
team sucks and then you can’t get to their players since access to the
roster is essentially locked, further making things more
complicated…I still can’t figure out how I won in the league I was in
last year w/ that very problem…

You don’t have to pay attention to position? Interesting. So I can

want?

How do the pitching matchups work, anyway? Do you just draft a few starting pitchers and then set a rotation?

I lost out on not follwing suggestions 2 and 3. Everytime I went to

Kah,

I
have found that there is such thing as beginner’s luck. I scared the
boys in my league the first year I ever played fantasy baseball as well
as fantasy football (Warner won that league for me back then).

This year was different for me though. I outdrafted those silly punks…but went one and out in the playoffs.

Eventually you need a catcher et all unless you want a donut at the
postion. What he is saying if if the top guys at a postion you have not
filled yet are gone go ahead and draft a good player that is available
and get your catcher (or whatever) later.

So true. If you read the roto magazines they stress the by positions
approach. Sure, if you can get ARod or Nomar fine, but if not, and you
have to choose between Thome or Sosa and their 50 HRs vs. an
above-average SS that might hit 20, there is no comparison. Even though
OFs are a dime a dozen, guys that hit 50 aren’t. I made that mistake my
first year too.

Posted by: TTB Jan 18 2004, 01:20 PM
I will divulge no more strategies. I”m out for blood this year. cool.gif
Posted by: Razzy Jan 18 2004, 02:50 PM

My strategy in any league has been to get the best available players at
the hard-to-fill positions as quickly as possible – with the exception
of catcher, where there are maybe 3 or 4 great ones, and then a big
crapshoot, so I generally wait till the late rounds and gamble on
catchers with upside. As it turned out last year, all of the catchers I
took in our draft sucked horribly (Barrett, Vic Martinez, and I think
Josh Bard) and I ended up cutting them all and finding two .300-hitting
free agent catchers in Greg Myers and Jason Phillips. But I was pretty
solid at second, third, and shortstop because of this strategy last
year in all of my leagues, while others tried out guys like Raul Ibanez
and Brandon Phillips at those positions.

I also rarely take
any pitchers in the top 5 rounds or so in any draft I am in. Pitchers
go up and down from year to year moreso than hitters do, so I go for
hitters early, since they are more of a sure bet. I ended up with one
of the best rotations in our league, mostly because of taking old guys
like Clemons and Maddux, and a young guy coming off of an injury (guy
named Josh Beckett) in the middle rounds after quite a few other
starters had been picked, and picking up Dontrelle Willis and Brandon
Webb as free agents before anyone else got them.

I wait till
the middle rounds generally to draft most of my first basemen, starting
pitchers, closers, and outfielders. I will draft a stud first baseman
or outfielder in the top 5 rounds if I feel that they are the best
available player at that point, or if they are part of what I perceive
to be the top tier of players at their position.

One thing is
for sure about fantasy baseball drafts: They are NEVER as clear-cut
after the season plays out as they are during the draft itself. You can
always go back to any draft after the season and find a ton of guys
that got taken too early or too late (or not at all) that didnt at all
perform like their draft position would say that they would.

Damn,
I am going to miss being in this draft. I will, however, offer
consultation advice to anyone that needs it – for a small fee, of
course. cool.gif

Got to pay for all them diapers. ohmy.gif

Guys …

Thanks so much … was wondering what happened to the PressBox.

It
looks like everyone hangs out in this “S.P.O.R.T. Lounge/Gen
Discussion” section rather than the individual team section. Correct?

Yep, that’s right Beavis.

Our hosts have been gracious enough to give us this standalone section. Feel free to discuss anything you’d like here.

And we can curse….well a little

Posted by: St Louis Bill Jan 18 2004, 06:41 PM
Are there any vacancies in this F-ing league?
Posted by: pgrote Jan 18 2004, 06:43 PM
We’re not sure yet.

It
looks like there will be. How about this? We’ll give people till
Wednesday to respond. If they played last year and don’t let us know by
then we’ll go with whoever tossed their hat in the ring here.

Sound fair?

College guys gotta find beer money somehow.

I’m always up for a little gambling.

Patrick,
may I suggest giving people a little longer than Wednesday. Some people
dont start thinking about baseball till after the Superbowl (while
others, like me and some of us, start thinking about it the day after
the Cards’ final game).

Plus, Yahoo doesn’t open up registration till Feb.

I’ve never played fantasy baseball, but would be willing to give it a
try if there’s room. Not willing to play for money though, I don’t
trust my fantasy skills that much.
Posted by: kah2523 Jan 19 2004, 07:50 PM
Yeah, I was about to say that I will withdraw if y’all are playing for money.
Posted by: St Louis Bill Jan 19 2004, 09:13 PM
Alrighty now! Looks like someone here with the initiative to write down names should split this f-er into 2 separate fantasy leagues…the $ league, and the sissy-fun league
<edit>
…and even though I’m a sissy, I’d prefer to be in the $ league…
Posted by: pgrote Jan 19 2004, 09:40 PM
We’re tabulating. We’ll go back to the Wednesday deal.

I’ll keep the running tab.

If you haven’t said which one you’d like to do, please say you’re interested and you’d want a money league or no money league.

On Wednesday afternoon I’ll post the results and we’ll start.

For the money league … are we saying we’d each kick in $25?

Posted by: St Louis Bill Jan 19 2004, 09:56 PM

Ok, count me on the money side…so that’s $25 a team…did I hear
somebody else type 14 teams?…that’d be $350 total…would it all go
to the 1st place team? or maybe a top 3…like…$200-1st, $100-2nd,
$50-3rd?…I also don’t know if I trust P-diddy-Grote to be league treasurer either…I still haven’t gotten over being snubbed from the “Pressbox Lending Library”… gun2.gif
Posted by: pgrote Jan 19 2004, 09:59 PM
OH MY GOSH! I have no excuse. I sent it to Tino.

I must rectify this.

Posted by: dvyyyyyy Jan 19 2004, 10:02 PM
Do we want to make it a keeper league so that there is reason to play to the end?

Money
goes to the top 3, say 70-20-10, and then whoever finishes 4th gets to
draft first the following year, followed by 5th, etc, with whomever
finishing last, followed by 3, 2, and 1.

Note: keeper league
means you get to “protect” 10 guys for example that are on your roster
at the end of the season for the next season.

Posted by: pgrote Jan 19 2004, 10:03 PM
I’ve never done that, but I am fine with it.

I don’t care if we play for money or not, I just want to be in the one with the guys from last year.
I’m not going to read this whole thing, what did you want to do Pgrote? Razz?
Posted by: pgrote Jan 19 2004, 10:27 PM
Most of the guys from last year want to pay to play. Some new folks want to pay to play as well.

Some want free.

Tomorrow morning I’ll post the list of folks who want free and pay. That way we can sort through the leagues.

And you don’t have to read the thread.

Razzy is not playing this year due to his triplets. Can you believe that guy.

And thanks for putting this on the top.

Posted by: ElviswasaBluesFan Jan 19 2004, 10:49 PM

I don’t know about St. Louis, but out here plasma goes for about $25 per visit. You can donate twice in a 7 day period.

The only side effects I’ve seen are pasty white skin color, thirst and inability to maintain an erection for several hours. ohmy.gif

Fantasy Baseball works as such:

You draft players as if you were an expansion team’s GM (i.e., no two people in the league can have the same player).

There
are categories (runs, home runs, RBIs, stolen bases, average for
offense. wins, strikeouts, saves, ERA, whip for pitching).

If
you have Albert Pujols on your team and he goes 1/4, with a two-run
home run, then for your team you have earned 1 run, 1 home run, 2 rbis,
and a .250 batting average.

Every day (or week as was the case
last year) you field a team. Last year, each team fielded 2 players at
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, Utility (any players), and 5 OF. For pitching, each
team fielded 5 Starting Pitchers and 4 Relief Pitchers.

As your
team collects runs, hr, etc your team is ranked 1-14 based on your
cumulative total in each category. If you rank 1st in Runs, you get
14pts. If you are last in Stolen Bases, you get 1pt. You are ranked
overall by your total points.

Highest points win. (that was me last year biggrin.gif ).

I guess maybe the “wacky” poll can help, but for the rest, sheer charisma wins high picks.

Posted by: Tazlaz Feb 11 2004, 11:13 PM

Well, assuming everything goes like last year, there is no true master
list. As everyone made their picks on the Pre$$box (we cant mention
that word, can we?) in a thread. You looked up players however you
chose.

As for draft order, the commish will randomly draw names
for the order. Last year, Razzy had his little boy do it (and a fine
job he did too biggrin.gif ). So as long as Pgrote doesnt wind up with picks 1, 2, and 3, I guess I’ll trust him.

You’ll want to hook up with at least one fantasy magazine. They will have the full listings.

Draft
order needs to be determined. It will be a snake draft, meaning whoever
goes first in the first round will go last in the second round but
first in the third round.

Last year we played that you had a
lineup and reserves. I’m not sure how Taz and everyone feels about that
but I’m not a big fan. I like to get my team and everyone plays (except
guys on the DL). You protect and replace those guys with active
players. Point is you don’t have to worry about pitching match-ups,
etc., that way.

If you want we can have a Q&A session,
perhaps in an AOL chat room, sometime before the season starts. The
first time I played I had a sit-down with someone and asked questions –
that really helped.

I’ll never, ever play another fantasy game with them in my life.

Posted by: kah2523 Feb 12 2004, 11:12 AM

So what’s to prevent me from playing any player at any position in the

Posted by: ElviswasaBluesFan Feb 12 2004, 11:24 AM

No, players can only play the positions they played a certain number of
games at last year. Pujols is probably eligable to play 1b or LF only.

I am just using last year as a template.

2 of each infield pos + 2 catchers? Seems like overkill, especially
with as many people as we’ll have playing. But if it’s been done
before and worked out…….

I am just using last year as a template.

I thought having two per position worked out well since a balanced team could overcome a guy with a stud.

That’s cool. If everyone liked last year’s setup, we should go with it.

I kind of like the daily roster changes, but whatever. Whats the league id and password?

We can discuss that if you guys want.

Weekly made it fair to those who cannot watch daily I thought.

Even if it’s daily, you can still set your rosters to hold you a few days if you need to.

I like daily, but whatever the majority likes.

The issue with that is if you’re someone that has a ton of time you can
sit there and watch stats each day to move players around and get up on
folks. Weekly levels the playing field for those who have a limited
amount of time.

Posted by: pgrote Feb 18 2004, 10:29 AM
Ok, both leagues are set up.

What we need to do now is get the folks in the leagues.

I will PM the free players and let them know the details.

My
suggestion on the pay players …. before you have access to the league
you’ll need to send the money in. When the money is sent in you’ll have
access to the league. Does that sound good?

As soon as all players are in we’ll start the drafts.

I suppose, however, just b/c player a had a a good night or two,
doesn’t mean he’ll do well the rest of the week. I found that people
who watched it too closely(like a daytrader) ended up outhinking
themselves and hurting their team overall.

Ok, kidding on the last one.

Weekly
or daily. The only option is under weekly based on which day. I just
used the settings from last year in picking Sundays.

Things that suck out.

You have walks as scoring category, but already have whip.
could replace walks with ininnings pitched.(thought that would be neat)

also maybe total bases for batters.

I’ve never like walks or whip in the pitcher’s scoring, but one or the other would be fine. It does seem redundant.

total
bases is ok, i’ve played with and with out it. Just seems like a way of
tacking on needless extra points. I never saw why advancing bases
(other than SB, which we have) should give a player points.

They way I read it is that you cannot have a draft like that.

The only options they have are:

Live Online Draft
You
will participate in a live online draft that may last several hours and
requires a Java-enabled browser. In addition, you may be unable to
participate if you are using AOL as your internet service provider, or
access the web from behind a firewall. Test your system to see if it is
draft compatible.

Autopick Draft
We will draft teams for your
league based on either our default rankings or manager’s pre-ranking of
players. Once you set your league’s draft status to Ready, your draft
will happen within 72 hours.

Offline Draft
Your league
conducts its own player draft offline and submits the results via our
draft results entry page, which can be reached from the Commissioner’s
Tools on your league overview page.

With each of these options if you have someone who is out on vacation or unavailable due to work they are screwed.

We
did it this way last year and it worked well. I’m handling the
tracking, so all folks have to do is post their pick and ping the next
person.

Our experience last year was that it does take awhile, but you start earlier and it was no problem.

pgrote
was good about updating a site with all the picks so you didn’t have to
scroll through the entire thread. I am assuming he is willing to do
that again.

From experience, I personally cannot draft on Yahoo
from my work – firewall. If you wanted to try to get together on-line 1
weekend morning or 1 weeknight, we could, but the odds of schedules
working out seem slim.

Although with this bunch, who knows – we are all on-line all the time anyway.

Take it from me, go with the standard 5×5

BA, RBI, RUNS, HR, SB
ERA, WHIP, Wins, Saves, K’s

We added Home Runs allowed in the league that I have been in since 91, and it sucks, it is a category won TOTALLY by luck.
Do

2 of each infield pos + 2 catchers? Seems like overkill, especially
with as many people as we’ll have playing. But if it’s been done
before and worked out…….

I am just using last year as a template.

I thought having two per position worked out well since a balanced team could overcome a guy with a stud.

I like the roster settings as you set them up PG

Thanks, TTB.

SLUBLUE reminded me that the payouts will be affected by the fees associated by Pay Pal. It’s only a couple of bucks.

You have walks as scoring category, but already have whip.
could replace walks with ininnings pitched.(thought that would be neat)

also maybe total bases for batters.

Ok what do others think?

that’s fine

Geesh. How about just the doubles and triples? I like them.

You’re too nice PG.

We also need to decide on a date good for everyone…

What
we do is an offline draft. We establish the order and then do it
through the forums. Post your pick, then the next person posts theirs,
etc. It worked well last year and we still have time this year.

That’ll take forever…

It went pretty fast last year. A little over a week.

It will be pretty hard to arrange a time that we can all attend.

QUOTE (devaskar @ Feb 18 2004, 12:43 PM)
I recommend that when we do the draft on the forum that we start a new thread for it, just so it doesn’t get confusing.

I agree. A thread just for the draft is required and PG can do his web site again that would be great.

I’m registered as TTB…very creative. biggrin.gif

Here is what we agreed to earlier in the thread:

Ok here is where we stand now with the following understandings. If anyone wants to change them, let’s discuss.

Pay league will be 14 players at $25.00 per. Total amount is $350.

First place will get you $225
Second place will get you $100
Third place will get you $25

Both leagues will be set as keeper leagues.

Sound good?

Sounds good.

PG – Send me PM with details on how to pay.

If you draft guzman, and you win triples, its notl uck at all.

To
confirm, I just grabbed a roto magazine and it doesn’t list 2b or 3b.
That would be a hell of pain to have to look it up somewhere else to
boot.

EDIT: 2b = doubles, 3b = triples.

My magazine DOES go over third basemen and second basemen. wink.gif

who do i paypal for the payleague and how much?

I like daily roster changes

I
also like negative scoring for grounding into DP’s and giving up homers
for pitchers…..but i don’t feel that strongly about it

I can’t do daily changes.

Negative scoring is “fantasy” – points for this, points for that. I think this is a “rotisserie” league that we are going for.

Posted by: SLUBLUE Feb 18 2004, 02:30 PM
whatever….you don’t HAVE to do something daily….you can set your team for the week?

i think the weekly was a deadline every Sunday night to make changes.

Weeks run from Monday to Monday.

Seriously, it’s a long season. This is best for everyone.

Posted by: chazzz Feb 18 2004, 08:17 PM
This thread sucks.

How do I pay? I couldn’t decipher that part from this POS thread.

We
can use the message board for the league to decide on the settings once
everyone gets in. That might be easier to keep track of everyone’s
opinion.

Help me out. What’s the name of the league?
Posted by: kah2523 Feb 18 2004, 09:39 PM
OK, I see that was in the PM. My bad.

The name of my team is “ilovethenavy”.

My
job requires 12-hour shifts for as many as four days in a row, rotating
from days to nights. I vote for weekly roster changes.

I second that. I would hope most of us don’t have time to effectively change rosters every day. Weekly, please.

no, we need to do daily roster changes so we can utilize our benches on
mondays and thursdays. you can make all the changes for a week in about
5 minutes. then you don’t have to screw with anything for another week.

but please, i beg of you, do daily changes. i hated weekly last
year. there’s no point in having a bench with weekly, save for somebody
getting injured. that’s about it.
