Saucepan Chocolate Cake Recipe

  • 1/4 cup (4 tbs) shortening
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 squares (1 oz each) unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup sifted all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg

Place shortening, chocolate, and water in a 1-quart saucepan. Heat until chocolate and shortening are melted. Remove from heat. Add sugar, salt, vanilla, and buttermilk. Stir to blend, with a plate scraper or spoon. Sift flour, baking powder, and soda together; add to chocolate mixture. Beat to blend.

Add egg; beat again until blended. Pour into a greased pan (9×9 inches) and bake in a moderate oven (350F) about 30 minutes. Frost with Quick Chocolate Frosting. Yield: 9 to 12 servings.
