Caution: Never try to remove anything embedded in the eyeball. Cover your eye; don’t rub it. Get medical help promptly.
Attempt to remove only an object floating on the white or stuck under an eyelid.
Seat yourself before a well lighted mirror, look up, and gently pull the lower lid down. If you see the speck, pick it off with the corner of a tissue. If not, ease the upper lid down over the lower, then let it slide back. If that doesn’t work, look down and lift the upper lid, folding it back over a cotton swab. Pick off the speck if you see it; otherwise, cover the eye and seek medical help. You can do the same for another person; make sure to have good light.
