The game that fathered bridge
In the American version of this four-player game, partners sit opposite each other. The dealer deals all cards from a standard deck (ace is high), then places the last card faceup on the table; it’s the trump suit.
The player to the dealer’s left leads: others follow suit clockwise. Before playing, the dealer adds the exposed trump card to his hand. If a player can’t follow suit. he plays a card of any other suit, including trump. The highest card in the suit led wins the trick (round), unless it is trumped. The highest trump takes a trick. The trick winner leads the next round.
Each trick in excess of the first six that a team wins scores 1 point. A game is 7 points. Subtract the losers’ score from 7, even if you won more than 7 points, for the score value.
