How to fix a watch

How to wind and maintain one

Unless your watch is self-winding, wind it in the morning and always at the same time. Wind clockwise to full tension. When changing the time, move the hands clockwise only.

Oil in a watch may congeal or dry out. Have a small watch professionally cleaned once a year; have a large one cleaned every 3 years. Avoid opening the back of a watch; moisture and dirt may get in. If you accidentally immerse a nonwaterproof watch in water, take it for repairs as soon as possible to prevent rust from forming.

The battery in a digital or quartz watch will last from 1 to 5 years. Ask when you buy your watch. When the battery is about to expire, the seconds in a digital will jump 2 instead of 1.
