Typewriters cleaning; troubleshooting a manual machine
Keep any typewriter covered when not in use. Periodically clean the machine’s innards using a hairblower on medium) or a bicycle pump. Have the typewriter professionally serviced every 2 years.
On a manual, if you have to strike a key extra hard to make i t print, there’s probably grime in the segment slot at the base of the type bar. Dig it out with the tip of a nail file. Using a stiff typewriter brush, apply and scrub that area with typewriter cleaning fluid (both available at stationery stores). Wipe with a soft cloth.
If the print on the paper is blurred, you may need a new ribbon. Note how you remove it; to Install the replacement, reverse the steps.
Blurred or broken print can also mean that the characters are dirty. Brush typewriter cleaner on the characters: blot with a lint-free cloth. Dig out stubborn grit with a common pin.
If a type bar sticks in place, it’s probably bent. Press the key. Hold the character and its base near the segment slot with your fingers; gently wiggle the character sideways until the type bar straightens and moves easily when you press its key. If paper slips, swab the platen clean with denatured alcohol. Eventually a platen will become hard; replace it every 3 years. If any characters or type bars are broken or missing, have a service center replace them.
Electrics and electronics
If the machine doesn’t function in a working receptacle, check the power cord . If the power cord is all right, the problem may be blown fuses in the typewriter. Leave the replacing of blown fuses, as well as other repairs, to a professional.
