How to choose or buy a bird cage

Choose a cage large enough for the bird to fly around in, and equip it with at least two perches and with dishes for food and water. A cage with a removable tray under a wire mesh floor is easier to clean. Install a bath or place a bowl of water on the cage floor.

A finch’s cage should have in the center a branching limb that does not interfere with the bird’s flight. For finches or budgies, add a mirror, ladder, or bell to provide amusement. Canaries show no interest in toys.

Place the bird cage out of direct sunlight in a draft-free room that is kept at 70°F Clean out droppings and wash the bird’s dishes every day.
