- 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 cup seedless raisins
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup pureed applesauce
Sift flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves together. Mix in raisins and nuts. Cream shortening in a mixing bowl; add sugar, creaming well. Add egg; beat until mixture is fluffy. Stir in applesauce and dry ingredients.
Mix until blended. Do not overbeat. Pour batter into a greased pan (9×9 inches) ; bake in a moderate oven (350F) 45 minutes. Cool. Frost with Peanut-Butter Frosting .
Yield: 9×9-inch cake-16 pieces.
